After this invention, many factories began to switch to steam power rather than using water power. Because of this, factories could be built anywhere. Steam power was not only used for machines, but also for cars and railroads.
To heat the water used in the steam engines, factories burned coal. Because of this, the coal mining business grew. Instead of being built near water, factories were now built near coal mines.
